End Stations

The SXR access policy provides users with open access to facility owned end stations and collaborative access for end stations that are externally supported. Users are required to coordinate the equipment necessary for the proposed experiment to be feasible. Proposers that previously relied on the facility to ensure that equipment would be available for their experiments can now

  1. use equipment provided by the SXR instrument

  2. collaborate with others who can provide the equipment listed below or

  3. develop their own equipment.

    Note that developing equipment must include the documentation listed on the "Documents" tab of the SXR webpage.


Pre-Mono Transmission Sample Chamber (Open Access)


This experimental station is before the monochromator. Samples can be introduced into the unfocused , ~1mm in diameter, beam. Additionally, the optical pump laser can be in-coupled at this location.

Resonant Soft X-ray Scattering Station (Open Access)


This end station is designed for materials scattering and diffraction studies. The UHV system features a cryocooled sample manipulator and diffractometer.

Surface Chemistry End Station (Collaborative Access)


The UHV end station, outlined in the figure above, is designed for soft x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and x-ray adsorption spectroscopy (XAS) of surface and solid state samples of up to 10mm in diameter having ultra-high vacuum compatibility.

Resonant Imaging End Station (Open Access)


This endstation is designed for soft x-ray resonant single-shot imaging (Fourier Transform Holography and Coherent Diffractive Imaging), small angle resonant scattering and optical pump - x-ray probe of fixed targets in transmission geometry with focus on magnetization dynamics and phase transitions.

Momentum Resolved Resonant Inelastic Scattering End Station (Collaborative Access)


This endstation will study the dynamics of charge/spin excitations of solids in both time and energy domains using momentum resolves RIXS.

Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT) End Station (Collaborative Access)


The Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT) endstation is a system dedicated to the investigation of the interaction of light with dilute clouds of trapped highly charged ions (HCI).

Liquid Jet End Station (Collaborative Access)


The experimental station to study chemical dynamics in the liquid phase is based on a differentially pumped liquid jet system, developed at the MPI for Biophysical Chemistry.
